Does Scapular Dyskinesis Cause Shoulder Popping and Clicking?

Short answer
Shoulder Popping and Clicking is a common presentation when someone has Scapular Dyskinesis.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Relationship
- Scapular dyskinesis can be associated with shoulder popping and clicking.
- Assessment
- The sound is interpreted alongside pain, strength, movement, and injury history.
- Next step
- Persistent or painful popping should be assessed by a clinician.
Can scapular dyskinesis cause shoulder popping?
Scapular dyskinesis describes altered movement or positioning of the shoulder blade as you raise, lower, or rotate your arm. That change can affect the coordinated motion of the shoulder and may produce a click, pop, or shifting sensation. The sound may occur with or without pain. Popping by itself does not establish the cause, because several shoulder structures and movement patterns can create similar sensations.
What the popping may mean
With scapular dyskinesis, the shoulder blade may not rotate or rest smoothly while the arm moves. Muscles around the shoulder blade can then work out of sequence, making movement feel rough or less controlled. You may notice the sound during reaching overhead, pushing, pulling, or returning the arm to your side. A clinician will consider the sound together with pain, weakness, stiffness, injury history, and visible shoulder-blade movement.
A painless, occasional click can be less concerning than a new sound accompanied by pain or loss of function. Persistent symptoms still deserve assessment, especially when they interfere with dressing, work, exercise, or sleep.
What you can do next
Arrange an assessment with a physiotherapist or doctor if the popping continues, becomes painful, or follows an injury. The assessment may compare both shoulders, observe your arm movements, and check strength, range of motion, and tenderness. Treatment often focuses on restoring controlled shoulder-blade movement and addressing contributing weakness or tightness.
Until you are assessed, reduce movements that repeatedly trigger pain or a feeling of instability, while keeping the shoulder gently moving within a comfortable range. Do not force the shoulder through a click or start strengthening exercises that reproduce sharp pain without guidance.
When to seek care
Seek prompt medical care for shoulder popping after a significant injury, a shoulder that looks out of place, sudden inability to lift the arm, marked weakness, or severe pain. Urgent assessment is also appropriate if the arm becomes numb, pale, or unusually cold. For less urgent symptoms, book an appointment when pain, repeated catching, swelling, or reduced movement does not settle or is affecting daily activities.
Questions for your doctor or physiotherapist
Ask what movement produces the sound and whether your shoulder blade tracks differently on that side. You can also ask whether your symptoms suggest scapular dyskinesis, which exercises are suitable, what activities to modify, and which changes should prompt an earlier review.

Questions people ask
Does painless shoulder clicking need treatment?
Not necessarily. Occasional painless clicking may not require treatment, but ongoing or changing symptoms should be assessed if they limit movement or activities.
Can exercises stop shoulder popping from scapular dyskinesis?
A tailored rehabilitation programme may improve shoulder-blade control and reduce symptoms. Exercises should match the findings on assessment and should not cause sharp pain or a sense of instability.
Should I see a doctor after a shoulder pop?
Seek prompt care after a significant injury, severe pain, visible deformity, sudden weakness, or inability to lift the arm. Otherwise, arrange an assessment if the popping persists or affects daily life.
