Does scaphoid fracture cause wrist pain?

The scaphoid is a small bone that links two parts of the wrist. A fall onto an outstretched hand can injure it, causing tenderness in the hollow just below the base of the thumb. Pain may increase when you grip, pinch, push, or move the wrist. Swelling can be mild, so an apparently minor injury should not be dismissed. Other wrist problems can produce similar symptoms, and an examination with imaging may be needed to identify the cause.

Rest the wrist and avoid lifting, gripping, or sports that increase pain. Keep it supported in a comfortable neutral position, and use a wrapped cold pack for short periods if swelling is present. Do not press repeatedly on the tender area or try to test the wrist by force. Arrange prompt medical assessment after a fall or direct injury, because early protection helps prevent further movement of a possible fracture.

Seek urgent care if the hand becomes cold, pale, blue, markedly swollen, or numb, or if the fingers cannot move normally. Prompt assessment is also appropriate for persistent thumb-side pain after an injury, worsening pain, or difficulty using the hand. A clinician may recommend repeat imaging when the first image does not clearly show an injury but examination remains concerning.
