Does scabies treatment help with itching worse at night?

Night-time itching is a familiar pattern with scabies, but treatment does not always calm the skin immediately. The immune response and irritation from scratching can continue after the mites have been addressed. Persistent itch therefore does not automatically mean treatment has failed. A clinician may also need to consider incorrect application, re-exposure from an untreated contact, or a different cause of itching.

Apply or take the prescribed treatment exactly as instructed. Confirm which body areas need coverage, how long a topical product should remain, and whether a repeat application is required. Treating close contacts at the advised time can help prevent re-exposure. Launder or set aside recently used bedding, towels, and clothes as directed. For comfort, keep the room cool, use a bland moisturiser if suitable for your skin, and avoid scratching with bare nails.

Contact the prescriber if night itching is getting worse, new burrows or bumps appear, or symptoms remain troublesome after the expected recovery period. Seek prompt care for pus, spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pain, or fever after scratching. Breathing trouble or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue needs urgent help. Do not increase treatment frequency without medical advice.
