Does scabies cause skin rash?

Scabies may produce small itchy bumps, crusted areas, scratch marks, or fine lines where mites have burrowed in the outer skin. The rash often affects spaces between the fingers, wrists, elbows, waist, buttocks, or genital area, but distribution can vary. In babies, older adults, or people with reduced immunity, the pattern may be less typical and can involve broader areas. A rash does not by itself establish scabies; eczema, bites, contact reactions, and infections can look similar.

Have a clinician examine the rash if scabies is suspected, especially when itching is intense at night or other close contacts are itchy. Follow the prescribed treatment instructions carefully and ask whether household members or intimate contacts need assessment and treatment. Avoid sharing towels, clothing, or bedding until you have received clear guidance. Use mild, fragrance-free skin care and avoid vigorous scratching, which can break the skin and introduce infection.

Seek prompt care if the rash becomes painful, hot, swollen, rapidly more red, or starts draining, or if you develop fever or feel unwell. Urgent help is needed for breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips, tongue, or face. If the rash does not improve as expected, spreads after treatment, or returns, arrange review so the diagnosis and treatment plan can be checked.
