Does Rotator Cuff Repair Treat a Rotator Cuff Tear?

A rotator cuff tear can separate a tendon from its attachment, affecting pain, movement, and force. During repair, the surgeon secures the tendon back to bone, often through small shoulder incisions or an open approach when needed. Not every tear needs surgery: symptoms, tear size and location, tissue quality, activity needs, and response to physiotherapy all influence the decision. Repair is intended to address the damaged tendon, while rehabilitation restores controlled movement and strength.

A clinician will review how the problem started, examine the shoulder, and interpret imaging alongside your symptoms. Discuss non-surgical care such as activity modification, pain relief, and physiotherapy, as well as the expected protection period if surgery is chosen. After repair, a sling may protect the shoulder while movement is introduced gradually. Do not resume overhead work, lifting, or sport until your rehabilitation team confirms that the tendon and muscles are ready.

Seek an evaluation when shoulder pain or loss of function continues after an injury or interferes with sleep and daily tasks. Urgent assessment is appropriate for a visibly deformed shoulder, a cold or numb arm, or inability to move the arm after trauma. Following surgery, report increasing redness, fever, wound drainage, severe swelling, or a new sudden loss of function.
