Does robotic cancer surgery treat prostate cancer?

Robotic prostate surgery is minimally invasive surgery performed through small openings, with the surgeon controlling specialised instruments. The robot does not decide or operate independently. The aim is to remove the prostate and nearby tissues when the cancer is considered localised and surgery is an appropriate option. It may not be the right approach when disease has spread widely or when another treatment offers a better balance of control and side effects. Possible effects include changes in urinary control, erections and fertility; recovery varies between people.

Bring your biopsy findings, scans, PSA history and medicines to a urology consultation. The team will review grade, stage, prostate anatomy, general health and personal priorities. Compare surgery with radiotherapy, active monitoring or medicines when those choices apply. Ask about preparation, catheter care, activity limits, continence support and how sexual function may be managed.

After surgery, contact the care team urgently for inability to pass urine, heavy bleeding, severe or increasing pain, a high fever, worsening wound changes, chest pain or sudden difficulty breathing. New leg swelling with breathlessness also needs immediate assessment.
