Does ringworm cause scaly skin?

Ringworm grows in the outer layer of skin and can create a dry, flaky border as the patch expands. The border may be more noticeable than the centre, and itching or mild redness can occur. On the feet, scaling may spread between the toes or across the sole; on the scalp, it can be accompanied by broken hairs or hair loss.

Dryness, eczema, psoriasis, irritation, and other infections may also cause scale. Location, shape, itch, and changes over time help a clinician distinguish them, but scale by itself is not a diagnosis.

Keep the affected area dry, change damp socks or clothing, and wash hands after applying any product. Do not share towels, footwear, hats, brushes, or bedding while ringworm is suspected. Clean items as advised by a pharmacist or clinician.

A pharmacist or clinician can recommend an appropriate antifungal treatment and explain how long to use it. Do not scrape the scale or apply steroid cream without advice, since irritation and altered appearance can make assessment harder.

Seek medical advice for scalp involvement, nail changes, extensive scaling, repeated episodes, or no improvement with correctly used treatment. Get prompt help for severe pain, warmth, pus, fever, or rapidly spreading redness.

Ask whether the scale is consistent with ringworm, whether testing is useful, which areas need checking, and when you can safely return to shared sports or close-contact activities.
