Does rheumatoid arthritis cause hand swelling?

Inflammation from rheumatoid arthritis may cause puffiness around the knuckles or finger joints, warmth, tenderness and difficulty making a fist. Swelling can come with stiffness after rest and may affect both hands, though symptoms are not identical for everyone. Hand swelling can also result from injury, infection, crystal arthritis, fluid retention or other conditions. Arrange an assessment if swelling persists, recurs or makes gripping and daily tasks difficult. Record when it began, whether rings feel tight, which joints are involved, and whether morning stiffness, pain or swelling elsewhere is present. Remove tight rings early if the fingers are enlarging.
