Does rheumatoid arthritis cause finger stiffness?

Rheumatoid arthritis can cause painful stiffness, swelling and reduced grip in the fingers. Stiffness may be more noticeable after rest and may affect matching joints on both hands, although patterns vary. Ongoing inflammation can limit bending and straightening and may gradually affect hand function. Finger stiffness also has other possible causes, so the symptom by itself does not establish rheumatoid arthritis. A clinician considers the pattern, examination, other joints and any test results together.

Book an assessment if finger stiffness lasts, returns, or interferes with dressing, writing or gripping. Note which joints are affected, when stiffness is worst, and whether swelling, warmth, fatigue or foot symptoms occur. Gentle movement can help maintain function, but avoid forcing a painful joint.
