Does radiotherapy treat thymoma?

Thymoma develops in the thymus, behind the breastbone. Radiotherapy can be considered after surgery if the tumour could not be fully removed or if the team wants to treat an area where cells may remain. It may also be discussed when surgery is not suitable, or to control a thymoma that has returned. The decision takes account of the tumour’s extent, its relationship with nearby organs, and your previous treatments.

Treatment is planned with scans and careful positioning. Effects can include tiredness, skin changes over the treated area, discomfort when swallowing, or irritation of nearby lung tissue. Tell the team about existing breathing problems or autoimmune conditions, including myasthenia gravis, because these details affect planning and support.

Ask whether surgery, observation, medicines, or radiotherapy is the intended next step and what each option is meant to achieve. Bring operative reports and a full medicine list if available. Report chest discomfort, cough, breathlessness, or swallowing changes. Keep scheduled reviews because the team may need to assess both the thymoma and effects on nearby organs.

Contact the oncology team promptly for new or worsening breathlessness, persistent chest pain, trouble swallowing fluids, or a marked change in muscle weakness. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, or sudden inability to swallow. Do not wait for the next planned appointment when these symptoms are severe.
