Does radiotherapy treat testicular cancer?

Testicular cancer includes different tumour types, and they do not all respond to the same treatment. Radiotherapy is used selectively, often when the pathology and scans show a type or pattern that is sensitive to radiation. The target may include lymph nodes in the abdomen or pelvis rather than the testicle itself. Surgery and medicines may also be central to treatment, so the plan is made after the removed testicle has been examined and staging is complete.

Radiation near reproductive organs can affect fertility, and treatment near the abdomen may cause bowel upset or tiredness. Ask about sperm storage before treatment if having biological children later matters to you.

Ask your urology and oncology teams to explain the pathology, scan findings, treatment aim, and available alternatives. Discuss fertility preservation before radiotherapy or medicines begin. Tell the team about previous abdominal treatment, bowel conditions, medicines, and any concerns about sexual health or body image.

Attend planning scans and follow instructions about skin care, meals, and medicines. Report nausea, diarrhoea, urinary changes, or worsening pain so supportive treatment can be adjusted.

Contact your team promptly for persistent vomiting, diarrhoea that prevents drinking, fever, severe abdominal pain, or new urinary difficulty. Seek urgent help for sudden severe pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, or inability to pass urine.
