Does radiotherapy treat oesophageal cancer?

The oesophagus carries food from the throat to the stomach. Radiotherapy directs energy at the tumour and selected nearby tissue. It may be combined with medicines before surgery to reduce the tumour, used when surgery is not suitable, or offered to relieve symptoms such as pain or difficulty swallowing. The choice depends on the tumour's position, depth, spread, your ability to eat and drink, and your general health. Treatment can involve several specialists who coordinate the sequence.

Tell your team how food and liquids pass, whether swallowing hurts, and whether you have lost weight or are coughing during meals. Ask about a dietitian, softer foods, supplements, or another way to maintain nutrition if swallowing becomes harder. Discuss dental health, medicines, and any previous chest treatment. Keep track of pain, swallowing, and fluid intake so changes can be addressed early.

Seek urgent care if you cannot swallow liquids or saliva, have breathing difficulty, vomit blood, pass black stools, or develop severe chest pain. Fever, signs of dehydration, or choking with repeated coughing also need prompt medical advice. Contact the oncology team quickly when swallowing worsens rather than waiting for the next review.
