Does radiotherapy treat nasopharyngeal cancer?

The nasopharynx is the upper part of the throat behind the nose. Its position can make surgery difficult, while carefully directed radiotherapy can reach the tumour and nearby lymph nodes. Some people also receive medicines with radiotherapy, particularly when the cancer extends beyond its original site or has features that call for combined treatment. Imaging and examination help the team define the target and protect the brain, eyes, ears, salivary glands, and other nearby structures.

Ask your oncology team to explain the treatment area, schedule, and whether medicines will be given before, during, or after radiotherapy. Tell them about hearing problems, dental work, jaw stiffness, swallowing difficulty, weight loss, and current medicines. A planning mask may be made to keep your head still. Mouth care, nutrition advice, and hearing or dental review can make it easier to manage treatment effects.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids, uncontrolled bleeding, sudden vision change, new facial weakness, or severe headache. Contact the treatment team quickly if fever, dehydration, confusion, or rapidly worsening neck swelling develops. Early assessment can address side effects and check for problems needing immediate treatment.
