Does radiotherapy treat Merkel cell carcinoma?

Merkel cell carcinoma is an uncommon skin cancer that can behave aggressively. Radiotherapy may be recommended after an operation to treat the original site or nearby lymph node region, particularly when the team wants to reduce the chance of cancer cells remaining in the planned area. It can also be considered when surgery is not possible or when a particular area needs symptom control. The recommendation depends on the tumour’s location, size, surgical findings, lymph node assessment, and whether cancer is present elsewhere. Treatment is carefully planned around skin, nerves, eyes, or other nearby structures. Skin redness, soreness, dryness, hair loss in the field, and tiredness can occur.

Ask whether the planned field covers the scar, the original skin site, nearby nodes, or more than one area. Tell the team about previous radiation, skin conditions, medicines, and wounds that have not healed. Follow the service’s instructions for washing and moisturising the treated skin, and protect it from friction and strong sunlight. Report increasing redness, broken skin, swelling, or pain so the team can advise on dressings and symptom relief. Attend skin and lymph node follow-up as arranged.

Seek urgent help for severe bleeding, rapidly spreading swelling of the face or neck, difficulty breathing, or sudden vision changes when treatment is near the eye. Contact the cancer team promptly for fever, pus, rapidly worsening skin pain, or a new lump near the treated area. Early review can identify infection or another problem needing treatment.
