Does radiotherapy treat eye melanoma?

Eye melanoma, also called ocular or uveal melanoma, develops in tissues such as the uvea. A specialist team may use a radiation plaque placed next to the tumour, or another focused radiation method, to deliver treatment to the eye. The approach depends on the tumour’s position, thickness, distance from the optic nerve and other structures, and the condition of the eye.

The aim is to control the tumour while protecting vision and the eye as far as possible. Vision may still change because the tumour or radiation can affect the retina, optic nerve or lens. Follow-up usually includes eye examinations and imaging, and may also include checks for spread outside the eye according to your specialist’s plan.

Arrange assessment with an ocular oncology team and bring previous eye reports, scans and a list of medicines. Ask which radiation method is proposed, whether you will need an operation for placement or removal of a plaque, and how treatment may affect driving, work and vision. Use prescribed eye drops as directed and avoid rubbing the eye while it heals.

Contact the eye team for increasing eye pain, worsening redness, discharge, a sudden drop in vision, new flashes, or a curtain-like shadow. Seek emergency care for severe pain with nausea, sudden major vision loss, or injury to the treated eye. Do not wait for a routine appointment if a new visual change appears abruptly.
