Does radiofrequency ablation treat degenerative disc disease?

Degenerative disc disease describes age-related or wear-related changes in the discs between spinal bones. A scan may show these changes without proving that they cause pain. Radiofrequency ablation works on selected small nerves near facet joints, which sit behind the discs. It can reduce pain signals from those joints, but it does not rebuild disc tissue, reverse disc changes, or treat pressure on a nerve root.

A spine clinician can compare your symptoms with the examination and imaging findings. Pain that is coming from a disc, nerve root, muscle, or another structure may need a different approach. Diagnostic nerve blocks can sometimes test whether facet joints are contributing before ablation is considered. Discuss movement therapy, strength work, medicines, and other options as part of a plan aimed at function as well as pain control. Share any leg numbness, weakness, or changes in bladder or bowel function.

Get urgent medical help for new bladder or bowel control problems, numbness around the inner thighs or genitals, or worsening weakness in a leg. Seek prompt advice after treatment if you develop fever, wound drainage, severe new weakness, or rapidly increasing pain.
