Does radical hysterectomy treat endometrial hyperplasia?

Endometrial hyperplasia means the womb lining has become thicker than expected. A tissue sample helps identify whether abnormal cells are present. Management may involve monitoring, hormone treatment or removal of the womb, depending on the type of hyperplasia, bleeding, future pregnancy plans and personal health factors.

Radical hysterectomy removes the cervix and surrounding pelvic tissue as well as the womb. That extent of surgery is usually considered for particular cancers, not uncomplicated changes confined to the lining. Your clinician should explain why any operation is being proposed.

Arrange review of the biopsy report with a gynaecologist. Ask whether the result has atypical cells, what treatment protects your health, and how follow-up will check the lining. Tell the team about heavy bleeding, anaemia symptoms, medicines and whether preserving fertility matters to you.

Seek urgent help for bleeding that soaks pads rapidly, dizziness, fainting, severe pelvic pain or breathlessness. Contact your clinician for bleeding between periods, after sex or after menopause, even when it is light or intermittent.
