Does punch excision treat acne scars?

During punch excision, a clinician uses a small circular instrument to remove the scarred portion of skin. The wound is then closed or allowed to heal according to the technique and site. This approach is most useful for individual ice-pick or narrow boxcar scars that extend deeper than the surrounding skin. It is not designed to smooth widespread uneven texture in one step. The initial scar may look red, raised, or tender while healing, and the final mark can differ from nearby skin in colour or texture.

A dermatologist should assess scar depth, width, skin tone, active acne, and your history of thick or raised scars. Active breakouts may need control before surgery so new inflammation does not complicate healing. Share medicines, allergies, previous procedures, and any tendency toward prolonged redness or dark marks. Ask about the closure method, wound care, sun protection, activity restrictions, and whether resurfacing or another treatment might later blend the result with nearby skin.

Follow the clinic's wound instructions and contact them if bleeding does not stop with steady gentle pressure, pain increases instead of easing, the wound opens, or redness and warmth spread. Drainage, fever, or worsening swelling can signal infection and needs prompt advice. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding or a rapidly expanding painful swelling.
