Does prurigo nodularis cause itchy skin?

Prurigo nodularis is associated with a strong itch–scratch cycle. Scratching or rubbing can make nodules thicker, keep the skin inflamed, and create new irritated areas. Itching may be worse at night or during periods of stress, and it can affect more than one body area. Itchy skin has many possible causes, so the symptom alone cannot identify prurigo nodularis.

Keep fingernails short and press or tap the area instead of scratching. Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, lukewarm water, and a plain moisturiser soon after washing. Soft clothing can reduce rubbing, while cool compresses may calm a flare. A dermatologist can assess the nodules and choose treatment aimed at both inflammation and the itch–scratch cycle; do not pick, cut, or squeeze them.

Arrange a dermatology assessment when itching persists, nodules are multiplying, sleep is disturbed, or self-care is not helping. Seek prompt care if a spot becomes increasingly painful, hot, swollen, or drains fluid, or if you develop fever. Rapid swelling of the lips or face, trouble breathing, or widespread blistering needs urgent attention.
