Does prescription antiperspirant treat intertrigo?

Intertrigo develops where skin rubs against skin and heat and moisture remain trapped, such as under the breasts, in the groin, or between abdominal folds. Reducing sweat may help keep a fold drier, but a prescription antiperspirant is not a general treatment for a sore or infected rash.

Burning, redness, cracking, odour, discharge, or small surrounding spots can have different causes and may need a different product. Applying a strong antiperspirant directly to raw, cracked, or inflamed skin can increase discomfort.

Keep the fold gently clean and dry, pat rather than rub, and choose loose breathable clothing. Do not use prescription antiperspirant on the affected fold unless a clinician has confirmed that it is appropriate and explained where to apply it.

For a persistent or recurrent rash, a clinician can assess whether friction, moisture, irritation, yeast, or bacteria is contributing and select treatment accordingly. Arrange an examination if the rash spreads, becomes painful, cracks, smells unusual, produces fluid, or does not settle with gentle drying and friction reduction. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly increasing redness, severe tenderness, or feeling unwell.

Ask what is driving the rash, whether an antiperspirant is safe on nearby skin, and which barrier or medicine is appropriate. Mention previous products and any history of recurrent fold irritation.
