Does prescription antiperspirant help with excessive sweating?

Prescription antiperspirant commonly contains an aluminium salt that acts at the openings of sweat ducts. This temporarily limits sweat reaching the skin where it is applied. It may be prescribed for underarms, palms, soles, or other suitable areas, depending on your symptoms. It does not switch off sweating throughout the body and may not address sweating caused by a medicine or another health condition. Your clinician may first ask when sweating began, which areas are involved, and whether it happens during sleep.

Apply only as directed, often to fully dry skin at the recommended time, and wash the area as instructed. Do not use it on broken skin or immediately after hair removal unless advised. Mild irritation can occur; persistent burning, swelling, blistering, or a rash warrants a call to your prescriber. Keep a brief record of dampness, triggers, and activities affected. Wear breathable clothing and carry spare clothing if needed while the plan is being adjusted.

Seek medical advice if sweating begins suddenly, is widespread, occurs during sleep, or comes with fever, dizziness, chest discomfort, breathlessness, weakness, or unexplained weight change. Arrange a review if the treatment irritates your skin or does not help enough. A clinician may look for an underlying cause or discuss another option.
