Does premature rupture of membranes cause waters breaking?

The fluid may be a sudden gush or a slow, continuing trickle that you cannot control. It is often clear or pale, but fluid colour and smell can vary. Urine and normal vaginal discharge can feel similar, so the only way to confirm the source is a maternity assessment.

The timing of membrane rupture matters because the care team may need to check the baby’s wellbeing, signs of infection, labour, and gestational age. Do not put anything into the vagina after suspected waters breaking unless a clinician advises it.

Contact your maternity unit or obstetric team promptly if you think your waters have broken. Note when the fluid started, its colour and smell, and whether contractions or bleeding are present. Use a sanitary pad rather than a tampon, and avoid sex and swimming until you have received advice.

Seek urgent maternity care for fever, feeling unwell, abdominal pain, regular contractions, vaginal bleeding, reduced fetal movement, or fluid that is green, brown, or foul smelling. If you can feel or see something coming through the vagina, call emergency services and lie down while waiting for help.

Ask how rupture will be confirmed, what monitoring is needed, which activities to avoid, how to recognise infection or labour, and when to return if the leaking continues.
