Does pre-eclampsia cause swelling in pregnancy?

Pre-eclampsia may change how fluid moves through the body's blood vessels, causing noticeable swelling. Pay attention to swelling that appears suddenly, becomes marked, or affects the face and hands rather than only the ankles after standing. A maternity clinician will consider your blood pressure, urine results, symptoms, and overall pregnancy history.

Other causes of swelling include normal fluid changes, prolonged standing, heat, or a problem affecting one leg. One-sided swelling with pain, warmth, or redness needs prompt assessment because it may have a different cause.

Tell your maternity unit or obstetric clinician about new, sudden, or worsening swelling. Keep track of where it appears and whether it changes quickly. Do not use water tablets, herbal products, or someone else's blood-pressure medicine. Your clinician can decide which checks are needed.

Seek urgent maternity advice for swelling with a severe headache, vision changes, upper abdominal pain, breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or feeling suddenly very unwell. Get emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, a seizure, or reduced fetal movement.

Ask whether the pattern of swelling needs blood-pressure or urine checks, what changes should trigger an urgent call, how to manage discomfort safely, and whether one-sided swelling needs a separate assessment.
