Does pre-eclampsia cause severe abdominal pain in pregnancy?

Pre-eclampsia can affect blood vessels and organs during pregnancy. Pain under the ribs or in the upper abdomen may reflect irritation or strain involving the liver. It may be persistent, intense, or different from ordinary stretching discomfort. Other possible causes include gallbladder problems, reflux, infection, or pregnancy-related conditions, so the location and pattern cannot confirm a diagnosis by themselves.

A maternity team may check your blood pressure, urine, blood tests, symptoms, and your baby's wellbeing. Tell them when the pain began, where it is, whether it is constant, and whether you have headache, visual symptoms, nausea, vomiting, or reduced fetal movement.

Contact your maternity unit or obstetric clinician promptly if the pain is severe, ongoing, or located under the ribs. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or unwell. While arranging help, note your symptoms and pregnancy details, and avoid taking medication that has not been cleared for you in pregnancy.

Seek emergency maternity care now for severe or worsening pain, fainting, trouble breathing, heavy bleeding, a seizure, confusion, a severe headache, new vision changes, or noticeably reduced fetal movement. These signs need immediate assessment rather than home observation, even if the pain comes and goes.
