Does follow-up after cancer treatment treat oral submucous fibrosis?

Oral submucous fibrosis causes tightening and scarring of tissues inside the mouth. It may affect mouth opening, chewing, swallowing, speech, and comfort. A surveillance visit can examine the lining of the mouth, assess function, review habits and previous treatment, and identify an area needing further assessment. Monitoring alone does not loosen scarred tissue or reverse the condition. Care may involve oral-medicine, dental, nutrition, speech, or specialist input based on your findings.

Keep scheduled mouth examinations and follow the exercises or treatments prescribed by your clinician. Avoid areca nut products, tobacco, and other irritants, and tell the team if stopping them is difficult. Note changes in mouth opening, pain, ulcers, bleeding, swallowing, speech, or food intake. Ask whether you need dental review, therapy for jaw movement, nutrition support, or examination of a persistent lesion.

Arrange prompt assessment for an ulcer, lump, bleeding area, or patch that does not settle, or for worsening difficulty opening the mouth, chewing, or swallowing. Seek urgent help if swelling makes breathing difficult, you cannot swallow fluids, or bleeding will not stop. Do not wait for routine surveillance when function changes quickly.
