Does follow-up after cancer treatment treat actinic keratosis?

Actinic keratosis is a rough, sun-related area of damaged skin that can be precancerous. A surveillance appointment may include questions about new symptoms, examination of the skin, and review of any previous cancer care. Those checks can identify a lesion that needs assessment, but the appointment itself does not remove or medically treat the actinic keratosis. Treatment decisions depend on the number, size, location, texture, and appearance of the areas involved.

Keep scheduled follow-up visits and mention every new rough patch, crust, tender area, or spot that is changing. Use sun-protective clothing, shade, and sunscreen on exposed skin, and avoid tanning beds. A clinician may examine the area closely and discuss options such as freezing, a prescribed cream, a procedure, or monitoring when appropriate. Do not scrape, cut, or apply unprescribed acid products to a suspected lesion.

Contact your clinician sooner if a rough patch bleeds, becomes painful, grows, develops a persistent crust, or fails to settle. Prompt assessment is also sensible when a new lesion appears in previously sun-damaged skin or when you have a history of skin cancer. Surveillance timing should not replace an appointment for a new or changing concern.

Ask whether the area needs treatment, a closer examination, or a biopsy, and how to care for the skin while waiting. Ask how often your follow-up should occur, which warning changes matter most for you, and whether your current medicines affect the choice of treatment.
