Does plica syndrome cause knee clicking and grinding?

Short answer
Knee Clicking and Grinding is a common presentation of Plica Syndrome, particularly during repeated bending and straightening.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Often provoked by
- Bending and straightening the knee
- More meaningful than sound
- Pain, swelling, catching, or reduced motion
What the noise may reflect
A plica is a fold of tissue inside the knee. When it becomes irritated or thickened, it may rub as the knee moves, producing clicking, snapping, or a grinding sensation. Discomfort may be felt around the front or inner side of the knee, and kneeling, stairs, squats, or prolonged sitting can make symptoms more noticeable. Knee noises are also common with other causes and may occur without a serious problem; pain, swelling, catching, and loss of movement provide more useful clues than sound alone.
Reducing irritation
Temporarily reduce repeated deep squats, kneeling, stairs, or other movements that bring on pain. Keep the knee gently moving within a comfortable range rather than holding it still all day. A physiotherapist may assess hip, thigh, and knee strength, then prescribe exercises to improve control and gradually reload the joint. Supportive footwear and a gradual return to sport can reduce sudden demands. Stop an exercise that causes sharp pain or increasing swelling and discuss a modification.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if clicking is painful, persistent, associated with swelling, or limiting stairs, work, or sport. Seek prompt help after a significant twist or blow if the knee gives way, becomes visibly swollen, cannot fully move, or you cannot bear weight. A knee that becomes truly stuck also needs timely evaluation because several conditions can restrict movement.
Questions for your doctor
Ask where the sound is coming from, whether your movement pattern suggests an irritated plica, and whether another knee problem needs checking. Ask which exercises are appropriate, what activity to pause, and what change should trigger earlier review.

Questions people ask
Is painless knee clicking a sign of plica syndrome?
Not necessarily. Noise without pain or loss of function can have many explanations and does not identify one condition.
Can physiotherapy help?
It may help by addressing irritation, strength, and movement control through a gradual exercise plan.
