Does pityriasis rosea cause skin rash?

Pityriasis rosea is an inflammatory skin condition. The first patch may be followed by multiple smaller, pink, red, brown, or violet patches, depending on your natural skin tone. These patches often have fine scale and may follow the lines of the ribs, creating a pattern on the back. Itching can occur, especially with heat, sweating, or dry skin. The appearance can overlap with fungal infections, eczema, or other rashes, so a visual examination may be needed.

Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and apply a plain moisturiser after bathing. Keep showers lukewarm, choose loose breathable clothing, and avoid scrubbing or picking at the patches. If itching is troublesome, a clinician or pharmacist can advise whether an anti-itch product is suitable for you. Arrange a dermatology assessment if the rash is spreading, the diagnosis is uncertain, or symptoms are interfering with sleep or daily activities.

Seek prompt medical advice if the rash involves the eyes or mouth, develops blisters, becomes painful, leaks fluid, or is accompanied by fever or feeling very unwell. A rash after starting a medicine also deserves timely review. Pityriasis rosea is usually self-limited, but a clinician can check for another cause when the pattern is unusual or symptoms persist.
