Does piriformis syndrome cause radiating leg pain?

The piriformis muscle lies close to the sciatic nerve. Irritation in this area can produce burning, aching, tingling, or an electric feeling along the nerve's pathway. Sitting, hip rotation, or repeated activity may make symptoms more noticeable. Similar radiating pain can come from the lower back or other structures, so the distribution, strength, reflexes, and back movement all help a clinician interpret it.

Change position regularly and avoid movements that reproduce sharp or spreading pain. Gentle walking may be more comfortable than prolonged sitting for some people. A physiotherapist can check hip and spinal movement and prescribe graded exercises for mobility, strength, and nerve comfort. Stop an exercise that causes increasing weakness, marked numbness, or symptoms that remain worse afterward.

Book an assessment when radiating pain lasts, interferes with daily activities, or is associated with persistent pins and needles. Get urgent help for rapidly worsening weakness, new bladder or bowel control problems, numbness around the saddle area, or severe symptoms following an injury.

Ask whether the pattern is more consistent with piriformis irritation, a spinal nerve problem, or another cause. Ask which activities are safe now, whether you need a neurological examination, and how progress will be monitored.
