Does scalp cyst cause skin lumps?

A pilar cyst, sometimes called a scalp cyst, forms from cells related to a hair follicle. It commonly feels like a smooth, rounded lump under the scalp and may move slightly when touched. Several can occur, and they may run in families. Many remain quiet, but a cyst can become sore, swollen, or red if it is inflamed or infected.

The appearance of a lump alone cannot confirm its cause. A clinician may examine its position, texture, mobility, and skin changes before deciding whether it fits a cyst or needs another evaluation.

Arrange a routine examination for a new, persistent, or enlarging scalp lump. Do not squeeze, puncture, or try to drain it at home, because this can irritate the skin and introduce infection. If it is troublesome, a clinician can explain observation, treatment of inflammation, or removal of the cyst and its capsule. Keep the area clean and avoid repeated rubbing from tight headwear or combing.

Seek prompt medical care if the lump becomes rapidly larger, very painful, hot, intensely red, or starts draining pus. Fever, spreading redness, or feeling unwell can signal infection. An ulcerated, bleeding, fixed, or unusually hard lump also needs assessment rather than home treatment.
