Does picosecond laser treatment treat freckles?

Freckles, or ephelides, are small flat areas of extra pigment that often become more visible after sun exposure. A picosecond laser uses short pulses to target pigment, which may make selected freckles less noticeable. It does not remove the tendency to form freckles, so new or darker marks may appear when skin receives ultraviolet exposure.

The treated skin may be red, swollen, sensitive, crusted, or temporarily lighter or darker. A clinician needs to distinguish freckles from other pigmented lesions before using a laser. Treating an uncertain or changing mark without assessment could delay the right diagnosis.
