Does physiotherapy treat a Baker's cyst?

A Baker's cyst is a fluid-filled swelling behind the knee, often associated with irritation inside the joint such as arthritis or a meniscus problem. A physiotherapist checks swelling, knee movement, thigh and calf strength, walking and activities that provoke pressure behind the knee. Treatment may include gentle range-of-motion work, progressive strengthening and advice on modifying squatting, kneeling or impact. Treating the joint irritation can help symptoms, but the swelling may persist until its cause is addressed.

Avoid repeatedly forcing a deeply bent knee if it increases pressure or pain. Keep the knee moving within a comfortable range and follow a tailored strengthening plan. Arrange clinical assessment if the swelling is new, recurrent or not clearly diagnosed, because different conditions can cause a lump behind the knee. Do not try to puncture or massage a painful swelling forcefully.

Seek urgent care for sudden calf swelling, warmth, redness or pain, particularly with breathlessness or chest pain. A ruptured cyst can resemble a blood-clot problem and needs assessment. Prompt review is also sensible for a rapidly enlarging lump, fever, inability to bear weight or a locked knee.

Ask what is irritating the knee, whether imaging is needed, and which activities should be modified. Clarify whether physiotherapy should focus on strength, movement or gait, how to monitor the swelling, and which changes require urgent review.
