Does photodynamic therapy treat actinic keratosis?

An actinic keratosis is a rough, scaly area caused by long-term ultraviolet damage. A clinician prepares the skin, applies a light-sensitive medication and allows it to absorb before exposing the area to a prescribed light. The activated medicine helps destroy targeted abnormal cells. Treated skin can sting, redden, swell, crust or peel before recovering. Photodynamic therapy may be useful when several areas or a wider sun-damaged field need attention, but examination is needed to distinguish actinic keratosis from other lesions.

Tell your clinician about medicines that increase light sensitivity, previous reactions and conditions affecting healing. Follow instructions for avoiding bright light after treatment, protecting the area and caring for the healing skin. Ongoing sun protection helps reduce additional ultraviolet damage but does not replace checks of rough or changing spots. The clinician may choose another approach when a lesion is thick, suspicious, recurrent or unsuitable for light-based treatment.

Have a rough spot examined if it grows, becomes tender, bleeds, ulcerates or fails to settle after treatment. Contact the clinic for severe or increasing pain, spreading redness, pus or fever. A changing lesion may need a closer examination or sampling rather than another cosmetic session, particularly when its diagnosis is uncertain.
