Does photodynamic therapy treat actinic cheilitis?

Actinic cheilitis is sun-related damage affecting the lip, often causing dryness, scaling, roughness or a blurred lip border. During photodynamic therapy, a clinician applies a light-sensitive medication to the treatment area and later uses a specific light to activate it. The resulting reaction targets abnormal cells. The lip may feel burning, sore or swollen during recovery, and crusting or peeling can occur. A biopsy or another examination may be needed when the appearance is uncertain or a deeper area is suspected.

Discuss your medicines, previous light reactions and any history of poor wound healing before treatment. Follow the clinic’s instructions about light avoidance after the session, keep the area protected and use only recommended products while the skin heals. Lip protection from ultraviolet exposure remains useful after treatment because ongoing exposure can promote further damage. Your clinician will decide whether this approach or another treatment is more suitable for the extent and character of the lesion.

Contact the treating team if pain, swelling, discharge or redness is worsening rather than settling, or if you develop fever. Arrange prompt assessment for a lip sore, thickened area, bleeding spot or ulcer that persists, because actinic cheilitis can overlap with more advanced change. Do not assume every rough lip patch is actinic cheilitis without examination.
