Does PGT-M treat thalassaemia carrier status?

A carrier usually has a gene change linked with thalassaemia but may not have the severe blood disorder itself. PGT-M, or preimplantation genetic testing for a monogenic condition, is performed as part of IVF. Embryo cells are tested for a specific familial gene change, and the results can help the fertility team discuss which embryos may be suitable for transfer. The test does not remove a gene change from your body, cure carrier status, or replace genetic counselling.

Arrange genetic counselling before treatment. Bring any blood-test or genetic-test reports and ask whether the exact thalassaemia variant in your family is known. Testing may involve both reproductive partners because the combination of their gene findings affects the possible inherited conditions in a pregnancy. Your team can explain IVF steps, embryo testing limits, and other reproductive options in language that fits your family.

Seek medical advice for symptoms such as unusual tiredness, breathlessness, dizziness, or persistent pallor rather than assuming they are caused by carrier status. During fertility treatment, contact your clinic promptly for severe pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, breathing difficulty, or marked abdominal swelling. Urgent symptoms need assessment even when PGT-M is planned.

Ask which familial variant will be tested, whether both partners need testing, what a result can and cannot show, and how genetic counselling will support decisions about embryo transfer.
