Does PGT-M treat genetic risk in related couples?

Preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic conditions, or PGT-M, is designed around a particular gene change or inherited disorder. Embryos are created through IVF, sampled, and assessed for the condition being targeted. This can support a discussion about which embryos may be suitable for transfer, but it does not alter the parents' genes or remove all genetic risk.

When partners are biologically related, they may share gene variants inherited from a common ancestor. A genetics team first clarifies family history, ancestry and any known diagnosis, then determines whether a reliable embryo test can be developed. PGT-M is not a broad check for every health condition.

Arrange genetic counselling before starting IVF or requesting PGT-M. Bring available reports and details of affected relatives, including diagnoses and ages at onset. The team may offer carrier testing or other genetic evaluation for both partners. Ask how long test development may take, what samples are needed, and whether prenatal testing would still be offered after pregnancy.

Genetic risk is usually managed through planned counselling rather than emergency care. Seek urgent medical help during fertility treatment for severe pain, heavy bleeding, faintness, fever or sudden breathing difficulty. Contact the genetics team promptly if a family member receives a new diagnosis, because that information may change which condition should be assessed.

Ask which inherited condition is being targeted, how it is passed through your family, and whether both partners need testing. Ask whether the laboratory can develop a specific PGT-M test, how results are reported, and what genetic testing is recommended during pregnancy.
