Does PGT-A treat implantation failure?

PGT-A is performed during an IVF process. A small sample is taken from an embryo and examined for changes in chromosome number. An embryo without the tested chromosome finding may then be considered for transfer, depending on the clinic's advice and the available embryos.

Implantation failure can have several possible contributors, including embryo development, the uterine cavity, the lining, timing, sperm factors and conditions affecting health. PGT-A addresses only one part of that picture: embryo chromosome information. It does not repair the uterine lining, remove a cavity problem or guarantee that an embryo will implant.

After an unsuccessful transfer, ask your fertility team whether reviewing the embryo history, uterine cavity, lining preparation, transfer details and relevant medical conditions would be useful. The right assessment depends on your treatment history and the number and pattern of unsuccessful transfers.

If PGT-A is being considered, discuss what question the test is intended to answer, how results could affect embryo selection, and whether there may be no suitable embryo to transfer. Your clinician can also explain the biopsy and laboratory process in the context of your IVF plan.

Contact your fertility clinic promptly for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, faintness, fever, or shortness of breath after an embryo transfer or fertility treatment. These symptoms need clinical assessment and are not explained by implantation failure alone.

Ask what causes of failed implantation have been considered, what PGT-A could add in your situation, and how a result would change the transfer plan. Ask which tests are recommended before another cycle and what their limits are.
