Can peripheral arterial disease cause leg pain when walking?

Short answer
Leg Pain When Walking is a very common presentation of Peripheral Arterial Disease.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why walking can bring on pain
Working leg muscles need more oxygen-rich blood during walking. When peripheral arterial disease narrows the supplying arteries, demand may exceed flow and cause aching, cramping or heaviness, often in the calf, thigh or buttock. The discomfort may ease after resting and return when activity starts again. This pattern is sometimes called intermittent claudication.
Muscle, joint, nerve and spinal problems can cause similar pain, and the location or timing may differ. A clinician can compare both legs, check pulses and skin, and assess walking symptoms before deciding whether circulation tests are appropriate.
Steps that support assessment
Book a medical appointment if pain repeatedly limits walking or follows a predictable activity pattern. Note where it starts, how far you walk before it appears, how quickly rest helps and whether there is numbness or a wound. Follow prescribed exercise or vascular advice, protect your feet, and avoid smoking or nicotine exposure. Do not push through severe or changing pain.
When to seek urgent help
Get urgent care for sudden severe leg pain, a cold or pale foot, new weakness or numbness, inability to move the limb, or a wound with rapidly changing colour. Prompt assessment is also needed when pain occurs at rest, wakes you repeatedly, or is accompanied by tissue breakdown.
Questions for your doctor
Does my pain pattern suggest reduced circulation or another cause? Should my pulses or ankle blood flow be checked? Which walking plan is suitable, and what symptoms should trigger urgent care?
