Does peptic ulcer cause nausea?

A peptic ulcer is a sore affecting the stomach lining or the nearby upper small intestine. The irritation can produce a sick feeling, sometimes around meals. Nausea is also associated with many other conditions and medicines, so it needs to be considered with your other symptoms.

You may feel queasy, have an unsettled stomach, or avoid food because eating seems to worsen discomfort. Some people notice a burning, aching, or gnawing feeling in the upper abdomen. Repeated nausea can make it harder to drink enough and may affect daily routines.

The timing of symptoms matters. Make a note of whether nausea occurs on an empty stomach, after meals, overnight, or after taking a pain medicine.

Book a medical review for ongoing nausea, particularly when it occurs with upper abdominal pain, reduced appetite, or vomiting. Sip fluids regularly and try small, plain meals if you can tolerate them. Get urgent medical help if you vomit blood or material like coffee grounds, pass black tar-like stools, develop sudden severe abdominal pain, faint, become confused, or cannot keep fluids down. These are red flags for bleeding, dehydration, or another serious problem that should be assessed without delay.

Ask what features point toward an ulcer or another cause, whether your medicines could be worsening symptoms, and how to manage nausea while assessment is underway. Mention any weight change, vomiting, black stools, recent illness, and the foods or activities that affect symptoms.
