Does peptic ulcer cause chest pain?

Ulcer discomfort often begins in the upper abdomen but may be felt behind the lower breastbone. It may be burning, aching, or pressure-like and can occur with nausea, bloating, or an uncomfortable sense of fullness. Reflux and irritation of the oesophagus can create a similar sensation.

Chest pain cannot be sorted reliably by how it feels at home. Heart and lung conditions, muscle strain, anxiety, and digestive problems can overlap. A clinician uses the symptom pattern, examination, medicines, and tests where needed to distinguish them.

If chest discomfort is recurrent but you feel otherwise well, arrange a timely medical review. Note whether it occurs with exertion, meals, lying down, swallowing, or use of anti-inflammatory pain medicines. Include associated symptoms such as breathlessness, sweating, nausea, abdominal pain, or black stools.

A clinician may first rule out urgent heart-related causes, then assess for digestive conditions. Ulcer assessment can involve testing for Helicobacter pylori and, in some situations, an upper digestive tract camera examination.

Call emergency services for new, severe, persistent, or worsening chest pain, especially with shortness of breath, sweating, fainting, nausea, pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder, or a sense of pressure or tightness. Do not assume these symptoms are caused by indigestion or an ulcer.
