Does peptic ulcer cause abdominal pain?

A peptic ulcer is a sore in the stomach or the first part of the small intestine. It can cause a gnawing, burning, or aching discomfort between the breastbone and navel. Some people notice it when the stomach is empty, after eating, or at night, but the timing alone cannot identify the cause.

Abdominal pain has many possible causes, including reflux, gallbladder problems, bowel illness, and medication irritation. A clinician considers the pain’s location, relation to food, medicines, vomiting, bowel changes, and other symptoms before deciding whether an ulcer is likely.

Arrange a medical review if upper abdominal discomfort persists, returns, or changes your usual eating pattern. Bring a list of prescribed medicines, over-the-counter pain relievers, supplements, and any previous ulcer treatment. Anti-inflammatory pain medicines can irritate the stomach lining, so ask before continuing or starting them when ulcer symptoms are possible.

Testing may look for Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium associated with some ulcers, and may include a breath or stool test. Depending on your symptoms, a clinician may also recommend a camera examination of the upper digestive tract.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or suddenly worsening abdominal pain, a rigid abdomen, fainting, vomiting blood or material that resembles coffee grounds, or black tar-like stools. These symptoms can signal bleeding or another serious digestive problem and need prompt assessment.
