Does pelvic ultrasound treat imperforate hymen?

An imperforate hymen is a membrane that completely covers the vaginal opening. Menstrual blood may collect behind it, causing pelvic pain, pressure, swelling, or difficulty passing urine. A pelvic ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of pelvic structures. It can show fluid collection and support assessment, but imaging cannot create an opening in the hymen.

Treatment is usually a minor surgical procedure that creates an opening and allows trapped fluid to drain. A clinician will decide whether this is needed after an examination and suitable imaging. The timing and setting depend on symptoms, age, examination findings, and overall health.
