Does pelvic floor repair surgery treat rectocele?

A rectocele, also called posterior wall prolapse, occurs when tissue separating the rectum from the vagina becomes less supportive. It can cause a vaginal bulge, pressure, difficulty passing stool, or incomplete emptying. Repair surgery restores support in that area. Surgery may be considered when symptoms remain troublesome despite non-surgical care, but a bulge does not automatically require an operation. Similar symptoms can arise from other pelvic-floor problems.

Discuss symptoms with a gynaecologist, colorectal specialist, or pelvic-floor clinician. They may assess the vaginal wall, bowel emptying, pelvic-floor strength, constipation, and straining. Treatment can include fibre and fluids suited to you, bowel-habit changes, pelvic-floor physiotherapy, or a support device. If surgery is proposed, ask what tissue will be repaired, how bowel symptoms may change, and what recovery restrictions apply.

Get prompt advice for a rapidly worsening bulge, severe rectal or pelvic pain, inability to pass stool or urine, or new bleeding. Seek urgent help for severe pain with vomiting, fainting, fever, or a swollen abdomen. Do not forcefully push a painful bulge back.
