Does parp inhibitor therapy treat ovarian cancer?

PARP inhibitors block proteins that cancer cells use to repair certain types of DNA damage. Tumours with changes affecting another repair pathway, including some BRCA-related cancers, may be particularly sensitive, but eligibility is not decided from the cancer name alone. Testing of tumour tissue and sometimes an inherited genetic test may help guide the choice.

These medicines are usually taken by mouth and may be used after an initial response to treatment, as maintenance, or in another setting chosen by the oncology team. They are not suitable for every person with ovarian cancer, and the plan depends on previous therapies, blood counts, kidney or liver function and other medicines.

Ask whether tumour or inherited genetic testing is relevant to you and how the result would change treatment choices for you or relatives. Share every medicine, supplement and health condition with the oncology team. Blood tests may be scheduled during treatment to check blood counts and organ function. Report new symptoms rather than stopping the medicine on your own.

Contact the treatment team urgently for fever, chills, unusual bleeding or bruising, severe shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, or extreme weakness. PARP inhibitors can affect blood counts and may cause nausea, tiredness or changes in bowel habit; prompt advice helps the team decide whether treatment or supportive care needs adjustment.

Ask why this medicine is being offered, whether your tumour has a relevant repair-pathway change, how long treatment is planned, which tests are needed, and how side effects will be managed. Ask whether other treatments may be combined or used instead.
