Does Pap smear treat HPV infection?

During a Pap smear, cells are collected from the cervix and examined for abnormal changes. The test may be performed with HPV testing, depending on your screening plan. It gives information about cervical health; it does not remove the virus or directly destroy affected cells.

An HPV result and a cell result are related but not identical. A person may have HPV without abnormal cells, while cell changes may require closer assessment. The next step depends on the result, age, previous screening history, and clinical findings.
