Does pancreatic cancer cause unexplained weight loss?

Pancreatic cancer can reduce appetite, cause nausea or alter digestion. If the pancreas does not release enough digestive enzymes, the body may not absorb nutrients well; greasy or floating stools, bloating and diarrhoea can occur. The illness itself can also change how the body uses energy. These effects may happen together, but weight loss is not specific to pancreatic cancer.

Other explanations include thyroid disease, digestive disorders, infections, medication effects, dental problems, depression or reduced access to food. A clinician looks at the pattern of loss, appetite, bowel habits, thirst, pain and other symptoms, then decides whether tests or scans are needed.

Arrange an appointment if weight is falling without an intentional change in eating or activity, especially when appetite, digestion or energy has also changed. Keep a simple record of meals, symptoms, bowel changes and weight trends. Mention difficulty swallowing, new diabetes symptoms, persistent pain or jaundice. A dietitian can help protect nutrition while the cause is being assessed.

Seek urgent medical help for inability to keep fluids down, signs of dehydration such as very little urine or marked dizziness, severe abdominal pain, vomiting blood, black stools, confusion or yellowing with rapid deterioration. Emergency symptoms need assessment even when the reason for weight loss is not known.

Ask what might explain the weight change, whether digestion or nutrient absorption is affected, which tests are appropriate, and how to maintain food and fluid intake. Ask when to contact the team if appetite or bowel symptoms worsen.
