Does pancreatic cancer cause jaundice?

Jaundice turns the skin or whites of the eyes yellow because bilirubin builds up in the blood. A tumour in or near the head of the pancreas can press on or block the bile duct, stopping bile from draining normally. Dark urine, pale stools, itching and discomfort may occur. These signs need assessment because gallstones, liver disease and other conditions can also obstruct or alter bile flow.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for new yellowing of the eyes or skin. A clinician may examine you and request blood tests or scans to identify the cause and check bile drainage. Do not delay because the yellowing is mild or painless, and tell the clinician about itching, urine or stool changes, pain, fever and weight change.

Seek urgent help if jaundice occurs with fever, chills, worsening abdominal pain, vomiting, confusion or marked drowsiness. These combinations can signal infection or impaired bile drainage requiring rapid treatment.

Ask what may be causing the jaundice, which tests are needed, whether bile flow is blocked, and what symptoms should prompt immediate review.
