Does palliative radiotherapy treat metastatic breast cancer?

Metastatic breast cancer can affect different parts of the body, and radiotherapy is directed at a particular site rather than the whole body. Depending on the location, it may ease pain, reduce pressure, help control bleeding, or support function. Treatment selection considers symptoms, scans, previous radiation, other cancer medicines and your goals. Radiotherapy may be given alongside systemic treatment, with the schedule coordinated by your oncology team.

Tell your team which symptom is limiting you and how it changes during the day. Mention previous radiotherapy, implanted devices, medicines and any difficulty lying still or travelling. Planning scans help define the area to treat and protect nearby healthy tissue. Ask how the proposed treatment fits with hormone therapy, targeted treatment, chemotherapy or other care. Continue medicines as directed unless your team gives a different plan.

Seek urgent help for new severe breathlessness, heavy bleeding, sudden weakness or numbness, inability to walk, a suspected fracture, severe headache with confusion, or loss of bladder or bowel control. These symptoms can signal a problem needing rapid assessment. Contact the oncology team promptly for rapidly worsening pain, vomiting that prevents medicines, or a new symptom after treatment.

Ask which metastatic site is being targeted, what symptom the treatment is intended to improve, and how it will fit with your other cancer medicines. Discuss expected timing, possible effects on nearby organs, travel arrangements and the number of visits planned.
