Does palliative radiotherapy treat bone metastases?

Cancer cells in bone can irritate nearby tissue and weaken the bone. Focused radiation may reduce tumour activity and inflammation at a painful or troublesome site. It does not treat every area of metastatic cancer, so the plan may focus on one or several locations causing the greatest concern. The team balances the target, nearby organs, bone strength and your wider cancer treatment. Pain relief can take time, and temporary soreness or tiredness may occur.

Tell your oncology team where the pain is, whether it limits walking or sleep, and whether you have had a fall or new weakness. Imaging helps show the affected bone and whether it is at risk of breaking. Radiotherapy planning maps the treatment area; your team may also discuss pain medicines, bone-strengthening treatment, mobility support or an orthopaedic review. Use walking aids as advised and do not put extra strain on a painful limb.

Get urgent medical help for sudden severe bone pain, a limb that looks changed, inability to stand or use an arm, new numbness, marked weakness, or loss of bladder or bowel control. These signs can indicate a fracture or pressure on nerves and need rapid assessment. Do not wait for routine radiotherapy planning when function changes suddenly.

Ask which bone is being targeted, whether it is structurally weak, what pain relief to expect, and how radiotherapy fits with medicines or surgery. Clarify how to move safely, when to report worsening pain, and who to call after treatment.
