Does palliative radiotherapy help with coughing up blood?

Radiotherapy directs energy at a selected tumour. In a suitable chest tumour, this may shrink or calm tissue that is bleeding and make coughing blood less frequent or lighter. It is aimed at symptom control rather than removing every cancer cell. Your oncology team will consider the bleeding source, scan findings, previous treatment, breathing condition and your overall goals. Relief may not be immediate, and the symptom can have causes that need different treatment.

Tell your cancer team about any blood, including its colour, amount, how often it appears and whether it follows a cough. They may arrange an examination, blood tests or imaging to locate the source and check your breathing. If radiotherapy is appropriate, planning identifies the target and protects nearby organs as far as possible. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own; mention blood thinners and all medicines before advice is given. Keep a note of new breathlessness, chest discomfort or dizziness.

Seek emergency help now if you are coughing up a large or increasing amount of blood, struggling to breathe, feeling faint, confused or unusually weak, or developing chest pain. Sit upright, avoid driving yourself and follow local emergency instructions. Even a small amount should be reported promptly if you have cancer, because the cause and urgency cannot be judged from appearance alone.

Ask where the bleeding is thought to come from, whether radiotherapy is suitable for that location, how quickly improvement might be noticed, and what side effects should be reported. You can also ask what other treatments may control the bleeding and whom to contact outside clinic hours.
